Algeria has unveiled a set of "preventive measures" aimed at halting the spread of bedbugs, following a surge in reported sightings in France, which is home to a sizable Algerian expatriate community.

Concerns are mounting that as Paris gears up to host the Olympic Games in just nine months, the influx of visitors could significantly boost the population of these blood-sucking insects in the French capital.

The Algerian Ministry of Health issued a statement on Thursday, announcing the implementation of a health vigilance system in conjunction with a range of actions aimed at averting any infestation linked to harmful insects.

These measures encompass "inspections and disinfection of airplanes, ships, and land transportation, as well as the strengthening of epidemiological monitoring."

Preceding these actions will be the "cleaning and sanitization of airports, seaports, and land entry points, along with the inspection and sanitization of baggage and merchandise that could potentially harbor harmful insects."

Footage from France depicting bedbugs on trains and in cinemas has rapidly circulated on social media platforms.

Numerous flights originating from French airports arrive in Algeria daily, and the two nations are also linked by ferry services.

Apprehension over the bedbug situation has led to widespread concern in France, putting pressure on the government as the Olympics approach.

An opposition Member of Parliament even displayed a vial of bedbugs in the National Assembly this week while demanding swift action.

In response to the growing unease, the government has scheduled an inter-ministerial meeting for Friday to address the issue.

Government spokesperson Olivier Veran expressed the ministers' eagerness to "address the valid concerns of the French public."

Bedbugs had largely disappeared from daily life in developed countries by the 1950s, but their resurgence over the past three decades can be attributed to their increasing resistance to insecticides, greater travel, and a rising preference for second-hand goods.

Data released by French health authorities in July revealed that over the past five years, more than one in ten households in the country has been affected by bedbugs.
