In a bus crash in southern Mexico early Friday, 16 migrants from Venezuela and Haiti died.

Initially, Mexico's National Immigration Institute reported 18 dead, but later lowered that number. There had been an overcount due to dismembered bodies, and the actual death toll was 16, according to prosecutors in the southern state of Oaxaca.

Two women and three children were killed, and 29 people were injured, according to both sources. Their condition was not immediately known.

AP reports that the cause of the crash in Tepelmeme, near the border with Puebla, is being investigated.

There were 55 migrants aboard the vehicle, mostly Venezuelans.

An increasing number of migrants are traveling toward the U.S. border, leading to a series of migrant deaths in Mexico. In order to avoid being raided by migration agents, migrants and smugglers often take unregulated buses, trains, or freight trucks.

A freight truck carrying Cuban migrants crashed on a highway near the Guatemalan border last week, killing 10 and injuring 17 others.

In a report by the National Immigration Institute, all of the dead Cuban migrants were women, and one of them was under the age of 18.

According to the Institute, the truck's driver was speeding and lost control of the truck, which was carrying 27 migrants. As soon as the driver saw the accident, he fled.
