The Shura Council underlined major developments undergone by Bahraini press over the past decades which have contributed to boosting its role in national growth and prosperity in the era of His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa. It pointed out responsible freedom of opinion fostered by the royal reform project which was reflected in the programmes and initiatives of the government led by His Royal Highness Prime Minister Prince Khalifa bin Salman Al Khalifa. The council also underlined the support of His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, Crown Prince, Deputy Supreme Commander and First Deputy Premier.

In a statement marking the World Press Freedom Day, which is observed on May 3 and is celebrated this year under the slogan “Journalism Without Fear or Favour”, the Shura Council lauded keenness of the Bahraini press on adhering to the main principles and values of practicing journalism while relying on honesty, transparency, professionalism and objectivity. It also praised the dedicated efforts of the journalists and writers in highlighting national achievements and the kingdom’s success in various fields as well as raising social awareness and encouraging constructive participation in the kingdom’s comprehensive development.

The Shura Council commended the distinguished performance of the Bahraini press amidst the current exceptional circumstances by backing the kingdom’s efforts to combat coronavirus (COVID-19), raising public awareness, disclosing information and urging to follow preemptive measures. It also underlined the great importance accorded by Bahraini press to the legislature and its constant support by covering the council’s general sessions, the committees’ meetings and a range of programmes held by the council around the year.

The Shura Council stressed continuous support to legislation aimed at promoting the role of journalism and highlighting its contribution to demonstrating the kingdom’s advanced status in democracy and freedom of expression.
