Kamal bin Ahmed Mohammed, the President of the Electricity and Water Authority (EWA), has reiterated the authority's commitment to executing strategic plans aimed at enhancing energy efficiency and decreasing electricity consumption. This aligns with national endeavors to achieve net-zero emissions by 2060.

Following approval by the Cabinet, led by His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, the Crown Prince and Prime Minister, the "Kafa'a" national program is set to be launched. This initiative aims to curtail electricity consumption in both private and public sector buildings across the Kingdom.

The president emphasized EWA's readiness to roll out the Kafa’a program in collaboration with Energy Service Companies (ESCOs) to enhance energy consumption efficiency in government buildings.

Kafa’a aspires to achieve a reduction of approximately 975 gigawatt-hours in electricity consumption and a decrease in carbon emissions by around 488,000 tonnes by the year 2040. Additionally, the program seeks to contribute to leveling energy usage during peak hours, thus mitigating the necessity for additional generation capacity.

Highlighting the program's pivotal role in promoting awareness of energy efficiency, the president announced plans to initiate a process for ESCOs to conduct energy consumption audits for selected buildings. This involves upgrading energy efficiency in these structures, monitoring and verifying the impact, and offering financing solutions to public sector customers.

The president underscored ESCOs as a key solution to realizing Bahrain's objectives in conserving energy and resources and achieving net-zero emissions by 2060. Last year, EWA successfully completed a pilot project in collaboration with ESCOs, focusing on enhancing the energy efficiency of four government buildings. The outcomes revealed a 41 percent annual reduction in energy consumption, a 39 percent decrease in bills, and a noteworthy cut of 5,430 tonnes in carbon emissions.
