For a seventh consecutive day, 41 workers remained trapped in a collapsed road tunnel in northern India, as a new drilling machine arrived on site to replace the damaged one.

The challenging nature of the exceptionally hard rock formation in the area, combined with debris clearance, led to damage to the original machine, halting rescue efforts on Friday, according to officials. This introduced a new obstacle to the ongoing rescue endeavors, as reported by the Associated Press.

The trapped workers' count was revised to 41 from 40, according to Anshu Manish, a director at the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited, one of the agencies overseeing the rescue.

On Thursday, authorities initiated drilling into the rubble and debris, covering a stretch of 24 meters (79 feet) so far, as stated by Devendra Patwal, a disaster management official. It might necessitate up to 60 meters (197 feet) of drilling to facilitate the escape of the trapped workers, Patwal informed The Associated Press.

Although some of the workers experienced fever and body aches on Wednesday, officials asserted that there has been no deterioration in their condition. Nuts, roasted chickpeas, popcorn, and medicine were sent to them via a pipe every two hours.

The seventh day of the rescue operation heightened frustration and anger among the families of those trapped. Relatives from various states spent nights near the tunnel, seeking updates. The recent setback has only intensified their concerns.

The construction workers have been trapped since Sunday when a landslide caused a section of the 4.5-kilometer (2.8-mile) tunnel they were building to collapse about 200 meters (650 feet) from the entrance. The hilly area is prone to landslides and subsidence.
