Despite Ducati's Francesco Bagnaia finishing eighth at the Indonesia Grand Prix in Mandalika on Saturday, Pramac Racing's Jorge Martin won his fourth straight sprint to roar to the top of the championship standings.
Marini's VR46 Racing team mate Marco Bezzecchi came in third behind Martin, who started on the second row in sixth place.
I feel awesome! Starting from sixth place wasn't the best, but it's definitely not the best for tomorrow's race." Martin said.
When he got off the mark, the Spaniard turned on the aggression, moving into fourth place before crushing Fabio Quartararo (Yamaha), Luca Marini and Maverick Vinales (Aprilia) into second place.
With 328 points, Martin now leads the riders' standings for the first time in his career, ahead of Bagnaia (321 points) and Bezzecchi (272).
Both VR46 Racing riders claimed podium finishes despite recent collarbone injuries despite putting in heroic performances.
After undergoing surgery earlier this month on a broken collarbone, Bezzecchi wasn't sure whether he would start on Wednesday morning.
After failing to qualify from Q1, world champion Bagnaia finished eighth behind teammate Enea Bastianini.
However, Ducati retained the constructor's championship on Saturday, which was some consolation.
Marc Marquez, Honda's six-time MotoGP world champion, crashed out on the first lap of the race after confirming earlier this week that he will join Gresini Racing for the 2024 season.
Aprilia's Aleix Espargaro also crashed out early in the race, also taking out Brad Binder, though the Red Bull KTM rider was able to get back on his bike and end the race in 19th
