Jordan's Energy Minister, Saleh Kharabsheh, announced on Tuesday the country's intentions to increase its renewable energy targets either by the end of this year or in early 2024. Jordan is nearing its 2030 goal of achieving 30% renewable energy in its energy mix, currently standing at approximately 27%. Kharabsheh shared this update during the ADIPEC energy industry conference in Abu Dhabi.
In addition to this, Jordan is set to unveil its green hydrogen strategy, complete with targets for 2030 and beyond. Kharabsheh revealed that they anticipate producing around 500,000 to 600,000 tons of green hydrogen before 2030, with further objectives for 2040 and 2050. Several international companies, including those from South Korea, Japan, the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Germany, the United States, and Britain, have expressed keen interest in collaborating with Jordan on its green hydrogen initiatives. Preliminary agreements for green hydrogen are expected to be signed within the next two months.
Furthermore, Jordan aims to significantly increase production at its Risha natural gas field, which currently produces approximately 30 million cubic feet per day. The plan is to boost this output to 200 million cubic feet per day by 2030. There are also plans to expand domestic natural gas utilization. Kharabsheh noted that local fuel prices are influenced by global energy market prices.
