The education minister of Jamaica revealed on a social media platform that over 60 primary school children from Jamaica had to be hospitalized due to the ingestion of potent rainbow-colored cannabis candy. This unfortunate incident led to symptoms like vomiting and hallucinations among the affected students.

Fayval Williams, the education minister, expressed her confidence in strengthening safety and security measures to combat the sale of marijuana-infused products to children. She mentioned the regrettable circumstances in which she met with parents and stakeholders of Ocho Rios Primary School.

On a late Monday evening, Williams shared an image that had been reported to her ministry. It depicted a colorful package labeled as "full throttle rainbow sour belts," with each piece containing 100 milligrams of THC, a dosage typically considered strong even for experienced adults, according to Reuters. Williams recounted that some of the children had only consumed a single piece, underscoring the remarkable potency of the product.

It's important to note that Jamaica decriminalized the possession of up to 2 ounces (57 grams) of marijuana for religious, medicinal, and scientific purposes back in 2015. Additionally, the country established a licensing agency to oversee its legal medical cannabis industry.

Radio Jamaica reported that the Ganja Growers and Producers Association of Jamaica proposed a public education program to promote responsible adult consumption and prevent children from consuming cannabis products. They also advocated for stricter packaging regulations.
