Ferran Torres notched a goal and provided an assist for Spain in its 3-1 victory over Georgia in a European Championship qualifying match on Sunday. The game, however, was marred by a potentially serious knee injury to midfielder Gavi.
Gavi, visibly distressed, left the field in the 24th minute in Valladolid. His previous goal for Spain secured spots for both Spain and Scotland in next year's tournament in Germany, as reported by the Associated Press (AP).
The 19-year-old Barcelona player suffered a harsh blow to the side of his right knee in a collision with an opponent. Despite playing on for a few minutes, he signaled to the team that he could not continue after appearing to injure the same leg while controlling the ball.
Spain took an early lead as Robin Le Normand headed home a cross from Ferran Torres in the fourth minute. Georgia's Khvicha Kvaratskhelia equalized on a counterattack in the 10th after some uncertain defending by Le Normand and Dani Carvajal.
The score remained level at halftime, thanks to a reflex save by Georgia goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili, who plays for the Spanish club Valencia. He denied Álvaro Morata's close-range shot.
Torres reclaimed the lead for Spain in the 55th minute, heading in a cross from José Gaya. During his celebration, Torres held up Gavi's jersey, dedicating the goal to his injured club teammate.
Coach De la Fuente retained only Gavi and Le Normand from Spain's previous 3-1 victory at Cyprus on Thursday. Spain topped Group A with 19 points, while Scotland secured second place with 17 points after a 3-3 draw with Norway in Glasgow. Georgia finished fourth with eight points from eight games.
