Dr. Mohammed bin Mubarak bin Daina, Minister of Oil and Environment and Special Envoy for Climate Affairs, took part in the Group 77 plus China (G77 + China) Leaders Summit held during the 28th session of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP28).
The summit's objective is to bolster global commitment to addressing climate change through decisive actions, marking the first of its kind held alongside COP. The minister commended the summit's discussions, particularly emphasizing the pivotal topic of transitioning to clean energy sources, a key focus of COP28 in addressing the impacts of climate change.
António Guterres, Secretary-General of the United Nations (UN), announced the establishment of a "Panel on Critical Energy Transition Minerals" during the summit. The UN chief highlighted that the panel would bring together governments, international organizations, industry, and civil society to establish common and voluntary principles for guiding extractive industries towards justice and sustainability.
The G77 + China Summit underscored the significance of prioritizing the economic progress of developing countries, emphasizing the need for essential financial support. Representing around 80 percent of the world's population, the G77 plus China aims to safeguard their collective economic interests and enhance their negotiating influence at the UN regarding major international economic matters.
